Vienna – Austria

I had flown through Vienna on a couple of occasions but never had time to visit the city. But this time was different. I somehow wrangled a return flight from Malaga for a week, for €59 with priority boarding!
After landing, I exited the terminal and made my way over to the taxi station. Before getting in, the driver asked for my destination, which I gave. He was kind enough to tell me that taking a taxi was not in my best interest and would cost me roughly €50, whereas taking the train was just under €9. A good gesture on his part, he could have taken me and collected his fee, instead he provided advice and a smile.
I took the S-Bhan (Metro line) into the city and from there an Uber to my hotel, Max Brown in the 7th district.
It was a trendy, hipster-type place, spread over two buildings with a large common room that opened onto the dining room/kitchen. My room, with an 80’s inspired décor was really nice. I had only been in town for a few hours, but I really liked the little I saw of Vienna thus far.
It’s a very easy city to move around on foot and that I did. Museumsplatz was a short walk away. A massive complex that houses several art installations as well as outdoor restaurants and bars, plus a really good ice cream parlour! The Opera House was a short walk away from Museumsaplatz, but I chose not to visit it.

Instead, I made my way down to Schönbrunn Place. The place was amazingly huge, like, HUGE! It took me 5 minutes to walk from one end to the other along the outer wall of the building. My one regret was not doing a guided tour of the inside of the palace.

I must have walked for hours around the grounds and probably didn’t see half of it. It had everything, curated flowerbeds, wooded areas, massive fountains, a zoo, walking and running trails. Name it, it’s probably there.
I stumbled upon Palmenhaus and Wüstenhaus, two greenhouses (one’s tropical while the other is a desert-themed) that sit within the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace. These were pretty cool; each had its own micro-climate. I was even lucky enough to see a pair of tortoises do the dirty. I never knew tortoises grunted during sex!
I initially booked a 5-day trip to Vienna, but while Googling, I noticed that Bratislava was 75km or less than a 1-hour bus ride away…
You guessed it; I stupidly cut my time in Vienna in half and made a detour to Slovakia, something I would come to regret (see my post on Bratislava). There are some places that I’ve visited and thought, “Never again” (I’m looking at you, Slovakia). I haven’t been as charmed by, or in love with a city like this, since Porto.
Vienna, I’ll definitely be visiting again!

I almost got arrested – for prostitution! On my last night in KL, we’d finished dinner, and I wanted to swing by Chinatown. Choo’s niece kindly called me a taxi...

After a couple of months of planning, it was finally time for my extended (Only 3 weeks) vacation to Asia. It’s been 7.5 years since my last visit, and like always my first and last stop of many, would be Singapore.
